Facial Plastic Surgery Procedures

Although Kung Plastic Surgery offers a variety of non-invasive and minimally invasive procedures, traditional plastic and reconstructive surgery generally offers the best, most durable results. Choosing a skilled surgeon is of the utmost importance for anyone considering cosmetic or reconstructive surgery of the face. Dr. David Kung is a talented artist with years of experience at his Washington D.C. area practice performing eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, rhytidectomy, and other facial plastic surgery procedures for patients from all over Maryland. Read on for further information about these procedures, or contact our office with questions about any procedure you may be considering.

Eyelid, Double Eyelid, or Eyebag Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid surgery at our office in Maryland is performed by the skilled hands of Dr. Kung, who has published articles on the procedure. Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is used to improve the appearance of the skin around the eyes, as well as to eliminate droopiness and undereye bags. At our Washington D.C. area office, we believe good candidates for eyelid surgery are Maryland patients of any age who feel that their appearance makes them seem weary due to puffy eyes, or who have problems with their vision for the same reason.

Puffiness or drooping around the eyes is generally caused by excess skin or fat in the orbital area of the face. Eyelid surgery at our Maryland practice can recontour the area, removing this excess skin and fat. The procedure won't remove crow's feet or lift sagging eyebrows, but it is ideal for patients with undereye baggage or drooping lids.

For some patients with baggage or puffiness but without excess skin, our Washington D.C. area practice offers a laser-assisted form of eyelid surgery called transconjunctival blepharoplasty. In transconjunctival blepharoplasty, the incision can be placed on the inside of the eyelid, leaving no external scars.

At our Washington D.C. area practice in Maryland, Dr. Kung is also able to customize eyelid surgery for patients of Asian descent. Many patients of Asian ancestry lack a double eyelid fold, so our Maryland office offers eyelid surgery to add what is called a supratarsal fold. The results are natural-looking eyelids that give the entire face a more youthful and energetic look.

Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty)

As the central feature of the face, the nose has a strong effect on facial symmetry, as well as on the factors our brains subconsciously use to measure attractiveness. Rhinoplasty at our Maryland practice, whether to correct a slight bump or a malformed nasal structure, can lead to greater improvement in appearance than most people would imagine.

Because there are many complex structures and types of tissue within the nose, rhinoplasty requires a great deal of care and precision. Choosing the right doctor to perform your rhinoplasty, like Maryland surgeon David Kung, is one of the most important stages of the process. Performed properly, rhinoplasty can lead to results that are rewarding for patient and doctor alike.

Dr. Kung has the rapport with patients to understand their vision of an ideal nose, the integrity to provide them with realistic expectations, and the talent and training to create beautiful, functional noses. If you're considering rhinoplasty in Maryland, Washington D.C., or any other nearby location, contact our office to schedule a consultation.

Facelift (Rhytidectomy)

In addition to the non-surgical wrinkle treatments and minimally invasive facelifts we offer at KPS, Dr. Kung is also skilled in surgical forms of rhytidectomy.

As we age, tissue in the face can succumb to the forces of gravity, causing the skin and its soft tissue ligaments to stretch and fall. This is most evident in the cheek area, where the point of maximal prominence descends with time. The "ptosis" which develops results in heavy skin lines around the mouth, and "jowling", loose skin and tissue below the lower jaw area. As a result, the face often begins to take on a round shape. These changes are most effectively addressed by resuspension of the midface in a superior vector, something a subperiosteal facelift was designed to do. Excess skin can also be removed, more conventionally, from the area in front of the ears and the neck.

The incisions can be made discreetly around the ear or placed in the scalp where they are imperceptible. The results can be striking, and Dr. Kung strives to give patients a natural appearance.

Chin & Neck (Genioplasty)

Excess skin and/or fat beneath the chin can result in a double chin, or an unattractive or indistinct jaw line.

At Kung Plastic Surgery, Dr. Kung can address this problem by removing excess skin and tightening the neck profile. This can be accomplished with a small incision placed inconspicuously underneath the chin or around the ear. Many times, liposuction to remove excess fat in the area is sufficient to achieve the desired effect.

Congenital Deformities, Reconstructive & Craniofacial Surgery

Dr. Kung’s talent and training in the area of reconstructive surgery attract many athletes, olympians, and martial artists to Kung Plastic Surgery. He also brings his expertise to bear in cases of congenital deformity. His experience places him in a select group of surgeons worldwide who are able to perform craniofacial surgery, and he has published articles on the correction of rare congenital facial deformities.

Reconstructive surgery encompasses multiple procedures, ranging from changing bony structure to altering soft tissue profiles. Any bone of the face can be recontoured either by addition of volume (with bone graft or prosthetic material) or subtraction (osteoplasty). The areas of the face most commonly treated are the cheek and mandible regions. A more specialized type of surgery involves surgical movement of the upper and lower jaws to create a more harmonious face with a better bite or occlusion (orthognathic surgery). Soft tissue enhancement usually involves augmentation with autologous or non-autologous tissue (e.g., collagen). The two most common autologous tissues are fat and dermis (which is the deeper layer of the skin).

Patients from all backgrounds come to Kung Plastic Surgery near Washington D.C. seeking Dr. Kung's expertise. If you're in need of reconstructive and/or craniofacial surgery, contact our office today.

Ear Pinning (Otoplasty)

Ear pinning, or otoplasty, is generally used to correct prominent ears by "pinning" them closer to the head. Otoplasty can also reduce the size of large ears. The procedure can be performed on patients starting at age 4 or 5, and is of particular interest in cases where oversized ears may lead to teasing or self-esteem issues, but can be done safely and effectively on people of any age.

The surgery involves a small incision behind the ear and the sculpting or removal ear cartilage to give the ears a smaller or less prominent appearance.
